People who endured abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism following their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his commitment to addressing the issue.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Pushed

The organization is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a minor. This policy has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in spring, has inherited this longstanding issue that has plagued the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the problem included an unprecedented meeting on paedophilia within the institution and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For Hickey, who uses they/them pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The Canadian activist shared they were abused by a priest who was later moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," Hickey expressed. "Both sides share the same goal, we want to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Historic Encounter

Seven members of the organization, which includes victims and advocates from over thirty countries, engaged with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "quite empathetic" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in Canada.

Hickey noted the leader was "tender" about their own story and appeared "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was sincere, practical, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is hoping that changes to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted experts and compiled materials that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that survivors repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they told the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they voiced hope for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a connection and persisting to strengthen that bond is a move in the correct path," Hickey stated.

They added that they told with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative ends - he valued that."
