A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
